RN to BSN Programs in Illinois
Illinois is facing a severe nursing shortage that's anticipated to reach 21,000 by 2020. Fortunately, the state has taken a proactive approach, developing numerous initiatives to address this shortfall. This includes becoming one of only 18 states to collaborate with the Center to Champion Nursing in America, establishing a first-in-the-nation externship program that allows nurses licensed elsewhere to practice under supervision in Illinois. Illinois has also started the Nursing Education Scholarship Program, which each year provides 140 students with tuition to complete nursing studies. Illinois' 116,000 registered nurses (RNs) earn, on average, $30.46 per hour for the state and $35.01 in Chicago, with those holding Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees averaging more than $1 per hour more than those nurses holding associate's degrees.
An RN to BSN program enables RNs to continue working while completing their bachelor's degrees at an accelerated pace. Employers in Illinois tend to prefer BSN graduates; research has shown that additional education, which includes critical thinking, communication, leadership, and advanced diagnosis and treatment, has been linked to decreased mortality rates. In addition to higher salaries, BSN graduates have the qualifications to advance to leadership roles, work in skilled care settings, and to take on greater levels of responsibility.
